Well, lo and behold, why yes, you can be whelmed!
Newly coined by SELF journalist Patia Braithwaite, ‘whelming’ describes yet another shitty dating behavior.
“Whelming is what happens when my matches spontaneously lament about how overwhelmed they are by their other matches instead of, you know, flirting with me,” explains Braithwaite.
Whelming is a BIG dating faux pas
Because yes, we get it, online dating can be overwhelming, or, also just plain old whelming, I guess, but that doesn’t mean you tell your dates about it!
And funnily enough, Braithwaite isn’t the only one to complain about this dating “phenomenon” (I obviously use that term very loosely).
Yet, dating apps can be overwhelming
If you’re feeling the effects of online dating burnout, that’s totally normal. You just gotta come up with a solution and talking to your dates about it like they’re your therapist, ain’t it.
Instead of whelming your dates, do this:
- Swipe less, date more. You know you can stop accumulating matches like they’re Pokemon if it’s overwhelming. Be picky with your matches and try to actively meet each match. Clover’s on-demand dating feature is perfect for this.
- Choose to date intuitively.
- Keep accumulating matches like they’re Pokemon if you want to (that’s up to you) but don’t complain about it to other matches/dates.
