If you’re anything like me, endearing terms like ‘honey’ or ‘shnookums’ or ‘baby’ don’t exist in your vocabulary. Instead, your rolodex of ammo to make fun of your partner grows bigger and bigger every glorious day.

Listen, all of us make-funners are very happy if you’re the type of person that isn’t a make-funner. It isn’t for everyone and that’s okay, but let us have our moment okay?

Research shows that the happiest couples are those who can tease each other into oblivion. Ok, I added the oblivion part but you get it.

Case in point:

Look at Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. They are actual couple goals and make every other relationship look like leftover mac and cheese (you know, it’s not the worst but it’s definitely not the best).

The study:

Joyscribe explains that Jeffrey Hall, a University of Kansas researcher, conducted 39 studies involving 15,000 people over a span of 30 years. That’s three whole decades of relationships to figure out that secret ingredient that makes them last just as long as a McDonald’s meal (no, it isn’t preservatives!)

Hall mentions that someone with a “sense of humor” isn’t what you should look for. That’s too subjective and may not actually rub you the right way (if you catch my drift). What you need to do is find someone with the same sense of humor as you. You gotta vibe on the same frequency, yafeel?

This act of creating something so uniquely and closely tied to your relationship is what creates a strong bond between two people, one that can withstand decades.

But the key thing to remember is that these inside jokes need to be created with love.

“Having an aggressive sense of humor is a bad sign for the relationship in general, but it is worse if the style of humor is used in the relationship. If you think your partner tells mean-spirited jokes, then it’s likely you’ve seen that firsthand in your relationship.”
