Atypical (an awesome show if you haven’t seen it), is a Netflix Original about a teen on the autism spectrum in a coming-of-age style TV show that’s equal parts funny, heartwarming, heart-wrenching, and most of all, real.
Now they’re coming out with a new documentary series that takes a deep-dive in the experiences people with autism experience while searching for love.
Love On The Spectrum follows seven young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as they wade through the unknown as they date for the first time.
In 2020, the CDC reported that 1 in 54 children is diagnosed with ASD and yet representation in popular media of people on the spectrum is slim.
Shows like Atypical and now Love On The Spectrum, are creating a more inclusive, representative environment in mass media by taking an intimate look at the lives of people with ASD. So, big YAY!
On top of the group of singles, there are two already-existing couples, one that’s engaged and the other that’s known each other for years.
With help from their families, experts give singles practical skills to help them navigate the dating world. Dating is literally confusing for EVERYONE.
“Most people on the spectrum have the same desire for intimacy and companionship as the rest of the population, yet difficulties in social interaction and communication are a key feature of autism, which makes finding a partner an often daunting and difficult experience. This uplifting and insightful series celebrates diversity and difference, with participants who are warm, funny and generously open. It sets out to teach us all lessons of love, romance, intimacy and acceptance.”Netflix
It originally aired in Australia but is hitting ALL your Netflix screens on July 22nd!
